Cozy | Fall

Updated: Nov 19, 2021

Today is the first meeting of our Spirited Book Club, so I've got books on the brain. (To be honest, I always have books on the brain - it's a professional hazard that I'm happy to have.) So, the book club - our theme for the month is fall cozy books and you've gotta ask what makes a book both fallish and cozy? Let's break it down.

Fall | Cozy

A fall book is largely established by its setting; that is the place/time in which the action of the book is set. For instance, the book I chose to (re)read, The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, takes place in a variety of universities and libraries. Universities, academia in general, give off a distinctly fall vibe; I think it's because terms typically start up in the fall therefore, uni = fall no matter the time of year. Other settings that establish fall include; harvest festivals, trees turning, occurrence of fall colors, and many others. What really matters is how well the author conveys that setting.

Now, I'll tell you a secret, fall is inherently cozy. Think about it, we break out the sweaters, hot drinks, firewood in the fall and all these things make us feel nice and cozy. Thus, chances are if you find a book with a good fall setting you have also found a book that gives off some of those sweet, sweet cozy vibes. (Some exceptions apply - see horror novels, often set in fall but seriously lacking in cozy, we take no responsibility for those!)

Well, that's it for today. See you next time.

What are you still doing here? I have work to do.

No, really, shoo! There are books to be read!

Reading does too count as work! Some of the best work in the world!

Okay, fine it is not always work.

You're still here... do you want to read to?

You can, grab a chair, a sofa, a pile of cushions and dive in!

You want a reading suggestion? The Historian!

Not that? Try The Hobbit, or The Bear and the Nightingale. Let's read!
